I love to eat “clean” and nutritionally balanced meals. I try to buy organic when available (and as my budget allows). Eating a diet rich in whole foods is always a daily goal. However, I am still human, and, like most humans, give in to cravings. Yep, that Starbucks toffee nut soy latte addiction…. It’s just not going away..
Due to being constantly on the go, or just neglecting to be organized with meal planning (especially lunch), I often find myself looking for something I can eat pretty quick, or that doesn’t involve lots of preparation. (I despise doing sink-full after sink-full of dishes). Otherwise, a healthy and nutrient-rich meal (again, especially lunch) doesn’t happen.
Recently, I received a sample of Energybits to try and review on my blog. After reading the information cards provided with the product, I learned Energybits are in fact not a supplement, but, a real food. I was eager to dive in, and give them a try.
According to the label, Energybits are 100% organically grown spirulina (algae). A serving size is 12 tabs, and, each tab is 1 calorie. The information card provided lists the nutrition facts and dosage (as recommended by the company who makes Energybits, Bits of Health, Inc.).
Energybits are best used for: (As per energybits.com)
- Increasing Energy
- Increasing Endurance
- Increasing Mental Vitality
- High Protein Snack
- Curbing Hunger
- Meal Replacement
- Balancing Blood Sugar
- Lowering Blood Pressure
- Reducing Fatigue
The Energybits information brochure states “a daily handful of energybits (30 tabs) will give adults all the nutrition and protein they need for the day, boost their energy and remove brain fog.” The information also notes that Spirulina algae is 64% protein, and contain 40 vitamins and minerals, as well as the second highest concentration of omega-3 (second only to mother’s milk).
According to Energybits.com:
How to take them:
For best results, take at least 30 ENERGYbits® (or more) before any workout, run, game or intense physical or mental activity. They will improve your energy and endurance. Also take whenever you are tired, hungry or don’t have time to eat or cook. They are a terrific high protein, low calorie snack or meal on the go. A favorite of Olympic athletes, swallow with beverage or chew them as you would a handful of nuts. Remember, they’re “bits” of food (not pills).
Now, this sounds great, but, what the heck do they taste like??
The sample provided to me contained 30 tabs. They are dark green in color, and have a rather strong- “fish food-esq” aroma. (I know that sounds gross, but, read on). While you can chew Energybits, the company recommends you start by swallowing them first. I took my Energybits is 2 divided doses- in the morning, and then in the evening, as 30 tabs is A LOT for me to swallow in one sitting. Just taking 15 tabs took a few swallows as I can not take a bunch of vitamins at one time either.
I was pleasantly surprised that there was minimal aftertaste, and, I didn’t feel nauseous after taking them. Overall, while it’s suggested you take a handful at a time, you can take as little or as many as you want. From what I have read about Spirulina algae, you can’t “overdose” on it. If you take certain medications, or are under the care of a physician, you definitely want to check with your healthcare provider first before taking them.
So, to answer the ultimate question….. Did I notice any difference in energy after taking Energybits??
Yes! While I didn’t take them right before a run/fitness activity, I could still feel a difference in energy level. I also could tell that I didn’t feel as hungry between meals. With the ease and portability of Energybits, this is a product that I really believe I would stick with. Especially on those days where lunch just isn’t what it should be, this product would be a great addition.
I LOVE the travel tin that my Energybits came in- easy to tote around. Fits in gym bag/purse. Would also allow Energybits to travel without the inconvenience (like having to put powders in baggies or small containers). There was a very small amount of green powder that got on my hand when emptying the tabs out of the container, but, compared to a messy/sticky protein bar, could easily be wiped off and didn’t stain.
How much do Energybits retail for??
I went to the Energybits website to check out the price.
Packaging: Price is for a re-sealable foil bag of 1,000 tabs and includes a matching, refillable travel tin.
